The HITECH Act of 2009

What is it?

The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act is part of President Obama's Stimulus package known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Through the HITECH Act incentive payments to physicians are available:

  • Totaling $44,000 per physician over 5 years
  • Beginning in 2011 through Medicare
  • To physicians using a certified EHR

How it works

First, physicians must purchase a 'certified' EHR

eClinicalWorks is certified by CCHIT (Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology)

While the term "certified" is not yet defined, the consensus is that CCHIT will be the certifying organization.

Second, physicians must be 'meaningful EHR users'

To be a meaningful EHR user, you must:

  • Use e-prescribing
  • Be able to electronically exchange information
  • Submit clinical quality measures

eClinicalWorks performs all of these functions now. For more information click here.

Why you Must Act Quickly

Before you receive your payments in 2011 the government is requiring you to report on clinical quality measures as proof that you are a user of a certified EHR.

So, don't wait:

  • You should begin the selection process for a CCHIT certified EHR
  • Proceed with the installation of the EHR
  • Train your staff how to effectively and efficiently use the system
  • So you can begin reporting in 2011
